Protecting Civic Space Ahead of Uganda’s 2026 Elections
September 11, 2025Last week, together with our partners Vijana for Sustainable Development and Environmental Action and EACOP Oil Host Communities, we conducted a joint field monitoring visit to our project:
“Empowering women for resilience against climate change health impacts in oil host communities” in Hoima, Buliisa, and Kikuube in Bunyoro, Albertine Region, Western Uganda.

Beneficiaries of the project attend to their pineapple garden.
This initiative, led by Foundation S, is equipping women and youth from oil-host communities to tackle the intersecting challenges of:
Heat stress
Unsafe water access
Food insecurity
Poverty
Pollution-related health risks
Gender inequality and SGBV.
Our mission: To assess progress and deepen local ownership of climate-health solutions. And the results speak volumes:
Community innovations on display.
Poultry enterprises with 1,000-plus birds.
Beekeeping and local apiary innovation (15 hives and 9 under construction).

Women groups pose for a photo with their hives under construction.
Climate-smart vegetable demo gardens: pineapples, okra, carrots, turmeric, eggplant, and more.

Tree nurseries supporting restoration and shade resilience.
Biogas and briquette production for clean energy alternatives.
Through our women climate resilience resource centers:
Honey is being produced and sold.

Vegetable harvests are boosting nutrition and income.
Agroforestry.
Women and youth ToTs are shaping sustainable adaptation from within.
We are proud that these solutions are not externally imposed but community-owned—built on local knowledge and guided by the community-strengthening support (CSS).

The poultry project is thriving.
Collaboration creates lasting strength in communities when they are the architects of their future. It is the reason we remain committed in everything we do.
Gratitude to our committed collaborators:
Foundation S, Vijana for Sustainable Development and Environmental Action, EACOP Oil Host Communities, National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda, DefendDefenders, Civ Legacy Foundation, Denmark in Uganda, Ireland in Uganda, and the Netherlands in Uganda among others.
