Clean Air for All: Why It Matters
September 11, 2025Civic space in Uganda continues to shrink as the country approaches the 2026 general elections. This worrying trend poses a direct threat to citizen participation, government accountability, and the health of our democracy.
At its core, democracy thrives when citizens are free to speak, organize, and participate in decision-making processes without fear. Yet, growing restrictions on freedoms of expression, assembly, and association risk silencing voices that are essential for inclusive governance.
Reversing this trend calls for a collective response. It requires government, civil society, and citizens to work together in ways that are rooted in trust, efficiency, and local knowledge. Only through such collaboration can we safeguard fundamental freedoms and ensure that Uganda’s democratic processes remain credible and participatory.
We believe that every voice matters.
Therefore, we are committed to advocating for policies that protect civic freedoms, strengthening citizen engagement at local and national levels, partnering with communities and civil society to build resilience against democratic backsliding, and empowering citizens to hold leaders accountable.
As we move closer to the 2026 elections, we call upon all Ugandans to remember:
Your voice is your power. Protect it. Use it. Demand a fair and transparent democratic process.
