October 13, 2025National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
As we conclude Week One of the Awareness Month, we pause to reflect on the fact that 22.3% of the ever-married women in Uganda have experienced physical violence from an intimate partner.
Poverty, social inequality, and illiteracy, among others, further entrap the survivors in the abuse.
In 2023, the Uganda Police Crime Report recorded 15,184 domestic violence cases. 10,792 victims were women.
Behind these numbers are stories of pain, fear, and survival.
Domestic violence leaves deep scars, not only physical but also emotional and psychological, often resulting in depression, PTSD, and long-term trauma. It also hinders women’s ability to work, learn, and succeed.
Every woman deserves to live free from violence, with respect, safety, and dignity.
Let us listen to, support, empower, and stand with survivors.
