Well-Intended UPE Policy and the Failure in its Implementation
January 25, 2025Citizens’ Concern Africa has learned of the arrest of Eron Kiiza, a renowned lawyer in Kampala.
At the time of his arrest, Kiiza had turned up at the Military Court in Makindye to represent his clients, Col. RTD. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale.
“Anybody can be arrested but within the provisions of the law,” said Andrew Mafundo, the Founder & Executive Director of Citizens’ Concern Africa. “Kiiza is not only a lawyer but a human rights activist. Therefore, arresting him (or any other person) in such a manner is dehumanizing.”
Secondly, the arrest may delay the delivery of justice for the accused, Kiiza and Lutale.
The Constitution of Uganda allows for the arrest of a person if there is reasonable suspicion that they have committed or are about to commit a criminal offense.
Kiiza’s whereabouts & his reasons for arrest remain unknown which both are totally contrary to the due process of the law.
“Once you arrest, ensure that the suspect has access to family, a lawyer, or a doctor (in case they need one). We, therefore, appeal to security to release Kiiza unconditionally till investigations are done so that he may be free to enjoy his right as a Ugandan and execute his duties as a lawyer,” added Mafundo.
We express our solidarity with Kiiza’s family, lawyers, and human rights activists in the country.
